"Karen Blixen’s multi-facetted work Out of Africa describes the seventeen years she spent in former British East Africa – now Kenya – from 1914 to 1931. In this unique and remarkable book she endeavours to create both a literary and personal all-encompassing vision of “her Africa”. Karen Blixen tells us about her daily, and often dramatic, life on the farm;  the country;  its indigenous peoples and foreign settlers, as well as Africa’s nature and wildlife. She switches between short anecdotes and episodes in and around the farm, and essay-like reflections on the meeting between different cultures, and the realities of colonialism, of which she was a part. From beginning to end Out of Africa is an expression of loss so poignantly expressed in the famous first sentence: “I had a farm in Africa”: a story of loss from which Karen Blixen’s new life – as a writer – began."(blixen.dk)
