"Dead Meat," by Philip Kerr, is a well-regarded thriller set in post-Soviet Russia, specifically St. Petersburg, in the 1990s. It offers a compelling look at the crime, corruption, and social issues of that era, seen through the eyes of an unnamed investigator from Moscow. According to reviews, Kerr's writing style, reminiscent of his popular Bernie Gunther series, effectively captures the atmosphere of a city grappling with the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse.
